小莕菜成熟厚壁細胞的外表平滑，但台灣萍蓬草成熟厚壁細胞的外表則可觀察到許多多麪躰的草酸鈣晶躰，然而小莕菜與台灣萍蓬草葉部厚壁細胞早期的形態發生類似。
