常用用法

example的基本意思是“例子,實例”。引申可指“樣品,範例”“榜樣,楷模”,有時還可指“警告”“先例”等。
set sb an example〔set an example to sb〕的意思是“給某人樹立榜樣”; make an example of sb (for sth)的意思是“(因…)懲罸某人以儆傚尤”。
for example的意思是“例如”或“譬如”,無論擧出一個或幾個例証, example都須用單數形式。常用作插入語,可縮寫爲e.g.。用了for example,就不宜再用etc.。

這兩個詞都有“例子”或“實例”的意思,常可互換使用。例如:
He cited examples〔instances〕 in order to prove his statement.他擧例証明自己的說法。它們之間的區別是:
1.example主要指在同類事物中擧出一個具有代表性、典型性的“例子”,有“通例”的意思; instance則常指用一個單獨的事實作爲“例子”來說明一種廣泛的道理或結論。例如:
She could quote hundreds of these examples.她可以擧出許多這樣的例証來。
You can't rely on her:for instance, she arrived an hour late for an important meeting yesterday.她這個人靠不住。擧例說吧,昨天一個重要會議她就遲到了一個小時。
2.example通常多用於教育中,而instance則不一定。

example, model

這兩者都可表示“榜樣”,它們的區別是:example可以足資倣傚的“好榜樣”,也可以指引以爲戒的“壞典型”; 而model一般指完美的、值得模倣的人或物。例如:
Make your father your model, and you will be a good man.以你的父親爲榜樣,你會成爲一個傑出的人。
